The Japanese all-female band known for all-things Pink, an excessive appetite for dumplings, and a genre-less sound with lyrics that redefine the definition of “cute,” CHAI is releasing their critically-acclaimed first studio album, Pink, on U.S. indie label Burger Records this February. Join them at Amoeba for a special live set and signing of their new album!
Pink features 11 feel-good tracks with sounds ranging from Pop, New Wave, Rock, and Hip Hop. With infectious instrumentals, catchy lyrics that infuse uplifting messages about “complexes,” and high-pitched vocals, CHAI continues to gather fans worldwide by challenging society’s norms one song at a time.
Formed in 2012 in Nagoya, Japan, identical twins Mana (vocals/keys) and Kana (guitar) would ask fellow high school classmate Yuna (drums) and college acquaintance Yuuki (bass) to join what we know now as CHAI. They independently released two EPs, Hottaraka Series (meaning “irresponsible series”) and Homegoro Series, prior to signing with Sony Music Entertainment (Japan), Inc. As apart of entry into the SXSW, “Japan Nite” showcase, CHAI outperformed numerous artists in Japan, subsequently securing their first U.S. performance in SXSW 2017. In continuation of the “Japan Nite” showcase, CHAI participated in a 7-city mini tour throughout the U.S., including New York, Chicago, Seattle, Portland, San Diego, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. Returning to the U.S. for their second time, CHAI will now grace Burger Records’ BURGERMANIA VII stage at SXSW 2018 as well as headline performances in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Long Beach, and San Diego.
