Authorities Tuesday released the name of a 74-year-old man allegedly stabbed to death by his 52-year-old stepson in Lawndale on the Fourth of July.
The attack was reported at 7:49 p.m. last Wednesday at a residence in the 4000 block of West 159th Street. Steven Waite of Lawndale died at a hospital.
A murder charge was filed Friday against Robert Schneider, who is scheduled to be arraigned July 23 at the Torrance courthouse. The Van Nuys resident could face up to 56 years to life in state prison if convicted of killing his stepfather, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
The criminal complaint alleges that the defendant has a 2017 conviction for second-degree robbery.
Schneider allegedly stabbed his stepfather multiple times in the victim’s driveway, then dropped the knife and walked away while witnesses called 911 and followed him until deputies arrived and took him into custody several blocks away.
The two men had been arguing — why was unclear — when the younger man allegedly stabbed his stepfather in the mid-torso area, said Deputy Trina Schrader of the Sheriff‘s Information Bureau.
The knife used in the stabbing was recovered at the crime scene, Schrader said.
