Los Angeles City Councilman Bob Blumenfield Thursday will join Los Angeles Kings President and Hockey Hall of Famer Luc Robitaille and other officials to sign the final paperwork solidifying a public-private partnership to build and operate a new ice skating rink in Reseda.

The city recently purchased two parcels for $6.8 million on Sherman Way for the rink, which will cost about $26 million to build and be funded by Proposition K funds, the Kings and through other city resources

“Where there’s a will there’s a way and I am proud to announce that we are at the cusp of bringing a new ice rink facility to the West Valley,” Blumenfield said in April when the city entered into escrow on the property. “This agreement between the former CRA and the city lets us move forward, bring on new partners, and build a facility that will be a cool, fun and active destination for the entire region.”

Blumenfield, Robitaille and other officials plan to sign a memorandum of understanding at the Toyota Sports Center in El Segundo at 11:30 a.m.

Blumenfied said in April that he found voter approved Proposition K funds that were put aside in the 1990s specifically for an ice rink to help fund the project, but they were not enough to build a rink, so he formed a partnership with the Los Angeles Kings to help develop the facility. When completed, the facility will be owned by the Department of Recreation and Parks, managed by the Kings and serve kids and residents of the West Valley and the entire region.

Blumenfield said the project is a central piece of his “Reseda Rising” vision for Sherman Way, and that the facility will be built on formerly blighted parcels.

The rink is intended to be part of the Reseda Town Center that will eventually add retail at the street level, a Laemmle theatre and apartments, Blumenfield said.
