A passenger in a speeding Dodge Charger was killed when the motorist rear-ended a big rig today on the Gardena (91) Freeway in Carson.

The passenger was identified as Griffin Alton Ray Jr., 45, of LosAngeles and the motorist, Chivon Sugar Bell, 36, of Long Beach, suffered from cuts and bruises to her face from the 3:17 a.m. crash on the eastbound freeway at Central Avenue, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Bell, who was arrested, was speeding in a 2007 Dodge Charger approaching the rear of a 2011 Freightliner and attempted to avoid the crash but clipped the left rear of the big rig while trying to change lanes, authorities said. Ray was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:28 a.m., the CHP reported, and “alcohol is being investigated as a factor to the cause of this collision.”
