Police discovered a man and a woman shot dead Sunday in an apparent murder-suicide at a lot in a recreation park in El Segundo.
Police were called to the 500 block of Pine Avenue at 11:20 p.m. on a “shots fired” call. That’s where they found a woman and a man lying in the parking lot suffering from gunshot wounds, El Segundo police Lt. Carlos Mendoza said.
Their preliminary investigation determined that 24-year-old Diego Lopez of Lake Elsinore and 23-year-old Wendy Silva of Paramount had been dating for about a year and were involved in a domestic dispute while inside a 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe, Mendoza said.
As the Tahoe was traveling through the north parking lot of the Recreation Park, Lopez shot Silva inside the vehicle, Mendoza said. Silva tried to escape by jumping from the Tahoe. Lopez drove away but immediately circled back to where Silva was lying, witnesses told police.
Lopez then got out of the Tahoe and shot himself in the head. Both people were dead at the scene, according to Mendoza.
The suspect’s handgun was recovered at the scene, said Deputy Kimberly Alexander of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.
Anyone with information about what happened was asked to call the sheriff’s homicide division at (323) 890-5500.
