A multiple-vehicle crash shut down the northbound San Diego (405) Freeway in Westwood Monday, and five people were injured, authorities said.

The crash was reported at 12:38 a.m. on the northbound San Diego Freeway just north of Wilshire Boulevard, California Highway Patrol Officer Tony Polizzi said.

Four vehicles were involved and five patients were taken to hospitals, Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Amy Bastman said. A 40-year-old woman and a 39-year-old woman were in critical condition and three men — aged 18, 20 and 40 — were in serious condition, she said.

A SigAlert was issued at 12:50 a.m. shutting down all northbound lanes at Santa Monica Boulevard. Traffic was being diverted off the freeway at Santa Monica Boulevard, the CHP said.
