Elixir of Love

Take a classic Italian comic opera, Donizetti’s L’Elisir D’Amore, translate it to The Elixir of Love and drop it into a 1985 Valley high school. Take a sip, it’s magical!

There’s the nerd in love with the popular girl, the dim jock claiming the hand of the cheerleader, the “doctor” who claims to have an elixir to bring love to dweeby Nemorino and an assemblage of all the student’s of every 1980’s teen movie. Add prop and costume elements of the era sprinkled liberally throughout and you are teleported back in time for an evening of pure delight.

Elixir of LoveFor those of you might say, “Oh, I don’t really care for opera,” here’s your chance to change your mind. Above the stage are two screens translating the Italian into English and Spanish to provide accessibility, though the translations are not literal but laughter-producing valley speak interpretations of the story line.

This production, brought to you by Center Stage Opera, is delightful and this company deserves huge praise for bringing us this wonderful reimagining of the original. The stage direction by Dylan F. Thomas and music direction and conducting by Mercedes Juan Musotto are impeccable.

The music is gorgeous and performed beautifully by the cast, which included Shira Renee Thomas as the popular cheerleader Adina, Orson Van Gay II, as the lovelorn Nemorino, Ian Walker as the jock and competitor for the hand of Adina and Ben Lowe in a hilarious turn as the devious Dulcamara. This is an immense production for such a limited run, so get your tickets now and show your appreciation for their commitment to the arts.
