Naming contest for baby kangaroo born at L.A. Zoo

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - There’s a new baby kangaroo at the Los Angeles Zoo, and visitors have a chance to name it, zoo officials said today.

Visitors to the zoo between now and April 26 can take a picture of the Western gray kangaroo and post it on Instagram or Twitter, along with a suggested name and the hashtag “#NameOurRoo.” The photo can also be uploaded here.

The grand prize winner of the naming contest will receive a GoPro HERO4 camera, valued at $399, and a $165 family deluxe-level zoo membership. Two runner-ups will receive a $126 Family level zoo membership.

Contest rules can be found at http://www.lazoo.org/NameOurRoo. Meanwhile, as part of its “Meet the Babies” program, the zoo will be providing visitors with activity guides mapping out its exhibits featuring baby animals, including Rosie the Hippo, a giraffe, five chimpanzees, a pair of otters, a howler monkey, a koala, a pronghorn, a sifaka and a piranha.

The baby animal activities are aimed at highlighting the zoo’s endangered and vulnerable species breeding programs, zoo officials said.

Zoo general admissions is $19 for people aged 13 to 61, $16 for people 62 or over and $14 for children aged 2 to 12. Children younger than 2 get free admission. Zoo members also get in for free.

The zoo’s hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, and closed on Christmas Day.
